What is WOSB certification?
WOSB certification confirms a small business is at least 51% owned and controlled by one or more women who are US citizens. It lets the firm compete for WOSB set-asides in eligible NAICS codes. EDWOSB is the economically disadvantaged tier, with personal financial limits, and opens additional set-asides.
Who qualifies for WOSB
A small business under its NAICS size standard, at least 51% unconditionally and directly owned by women who are US citizens, with women controlling management and daily operations. The highest officer position must be held by a woman.
EDWOSB adds economic limits
An economically disadvantaged WOSB must also meet SBA’s limits on the owners’ personal net worth, average income and total assets. EDWOSBs can compete for set-asides in NAICS codes where women-owned firms are substantially underrepresented as well as underrepresented.
Certification is required
Since October 2020, self-certification no longer qualifies for WOSB set-asides. Apply free through MySBA Certifications, or through an SBA-approved third-party certifier, which may charge a fee.
Check your NAICS code first
WOSB set-asides are only available in NAICS codes SBA has designated as underrepresented. If your codes are not on the list, the certification helps less than you would expect, so check before you apply.
